Rental Scammers Using Craigslist to Target Landlords

May 21, 2007

NOTE:  I have closed off comments to this post due to comments consistently containing names, email addresses and phone numbers.

I recently posted an ad on Craigslist in Hartford, CT for an apartment I have for rent.  In addition to the people actually interested in renting, I received about 20 scam e-mails.

Here’s my favorite:

Good-day       With sound of good health.  I’m Professor XXXXX Paleontologist “A fossil Hunter”  Am interested in your apartment/house
for rent posted on
Craigslist.com  With the little descriptions you gave
there-in, am satisfied and it redeemed my stress of searching around
for an apartment to rent. I would like to make an inquiry if the apartment is
still available for rent and the duration in which you want to lease the
unit. Preferably 6-12months
Get bak to me with the following:1- Security deposit fee ?
2- Monthly rent fees ?
3- Utilities if applicable ?
4- Dimension/measurement of the unit {s} ?
5- Crime rate of the area where the apt is located ?
6- Park lots if any ?
7- If the unit is Furnished or Unfurnished ?
8- Total Move in fees ?

ProfessorXXXXX
The Fossil Hunter {Paleontologist}

Never mind that the guy refers to himself as “The Fossil Hunter,” when you click on the link with his name, it takes you to several references – all to a man born in the 1700s!! Other signs that it’s a scam:

  • Poor English.
  • Asking questions about details you already gave in the advertisement. In my case, all the questions in the e-mail would have been answered if the writer had actually read my Craigslist post.
  • No direct contact information.
  • The writer is overseas.  While you can’t tell for sure with this e-mail, many of the scams are from people claiming to be in other countries.

How do the scammers make money? If I had contacted this person, he/she would have likely offered to pay the rent for the apartment site-unseen.  In addition, the person would have offered that his/her employer will include money for expenses in a check, which I would cash and then send the difference to my new “tenant.”  Obviously, I would never see my new tenant again – or my money.

It’s not just landlords they target. I am a renter, and I placed an ad on Craigslist for a roommate. Of the 15 responses I received, only two were from geniune people, the rest were scams similar to the one you posted. People like this prey on the desperate.

    Pretty sad, isn’t it.

I too am renting a condo.
Yesterday I put the ad on craigslist and literally within the 1st couple of hours I had FIVE different people with yahoo.uk addresses respond.

At first I though seemed odd, I was curious and wrote back.

All say they are Drs or Researchers who are on an assignment in the US for 1-2 years and they LOVE your place and want to rent it sight unseen.

Like the previous poster, they all ask questions that are in my ad.
They even ask for pictures when I have 2 links to pictures in the ad.

As soon as you write them back, they immediately tell you they want your place and want to get you a cashiers check from their “sponsor” right away, and it will be in the excess for what you ask for.

Of course they want you to wire them back the excess.

Bc I received so many of these that all sounded the same I googled and found out how the scam works, and the cashiers checks appear in your acct at first so you think they are legit and you wire the excess funds out.

Later on the check bounces bc its fake but you have no recourse.

Whats funny is that the scammers are totally obvious.

They all speak horrible English, ask the same exact questions, ask about details that are in the ad.
None of them ask questions that a normal person who would be moving in for 1-2 years ask.

Its like, if you are going to be scammer, AT LEAST be believable right??

These are so obvious you can spot them a mile away.

Not only are they immoral human beings, but they are very stupid in how obvious they are in revealing themselves.

I also received numerous emails with these precise scam items. One even sent me his passport #!! I wrote several back wanting their info like:
    1-Passport pic/info
    2-Bank statements on letterheads
    3-personal/profess. references
    4-Job letter/contract

and so on. Well they never responded! So one knows for sure that they are not legit.

Not the brightest bulbs in the pack.

The last time I posted an apartment for rent on Craigslist I literally received 50 different scam e-mails over a few weeks. the biggeste cluse for me was that the scam e-mails said nothing about my apartment – they talked in generalities and asked dumb questions.

Creeps are out there so watch out.

I also put my townhouse for rent on Craigslist and got the same types of responses from “A fossil Hunter” and the Dr. as well. Has anybody ever tried to find out who these people are and if so what became of it? Is it any use to contact the police or any other type of authority?

Craigslist has always been bad from spam. Can’t they do something about it. They obviously know it’s going on.

Gee i am so glad for this website because the exact same thing happen to me. It was strange & i had a bad feeling, i hought to continue & see how far it takes me but i am glad i researched it some more. “Regards” was a turn off, who uses that? This guy never wanted to fill out an application but just send money. well i was not about to give my info unless i felt comfortable & i am glad i did not. thanks again!

  • 22. LBrault  |  January 17, 2008 at 6:04 am

Beware of this scam when they ask you to call them on an international phone number. The number will be a fee-service number and you will wind up being billed. They will pocket the fee. Best way to spot this is that they REALLY push you to call them “free, free” etc.

  • 23. Carol  |  January 30, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Yep. Just got the check in the mail for $3000 last night. Wow the eagerness, too bad it isnt real. Im gonna scan this check and put it online lol.

  • 24. A Linnell  |  February 7, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    Could the reverse be true?

My employee has found a rental on Criag’s list with a price a little too good to be true. When she emailed the owners, they indicated that they are on a mission in Africa and that they’ll simply mail her the keys–no questions asked. The claim they are not in it for the money (thus the ridiculously low rent). Their name is Anglicized but their English is horrible–almost as if they wrote it in one language and had a web translator translate it back. What’s more is that the specific questions she asked (how long is the lease for, is it furnished, what are the deposits, etc.) were not addressed in their reply. They simply wanted to send her the keys.

  • 25. Victoria  |  February 8, 2008 at 2:45 pm

WOW! I am glad I decided to research and stumbled across this wonderful site with all of the information about rental scams on Craigs list. I just posted yesterday for the first time, planning to rent out a room in my home. I received three e-mails so far. Oddly enough, two of the women were coming to the United States conducting seminars on children with heart problems. In the emails I received, there were not really very many misspellings. Both did sign some version of “regards” I wrote back to both and this morning there was a new email from one of the women. She included a personal description about herself and said her job is as a humanitarian officer. HERE IS WHAT SHE WROTE AND CUOLD SOMEONE PLEASE REVIEW AND TELL ME IF THIS IS MOST LIKELY A SCAM?:

I already told my boss about this and he promised to make sure that he will meet up with the payment so that I can depart from here as scheduled. He also said I will have the advantage to make payment for deposit.I should arrive to US on or before Feb 25th so pls keep place for me till my arrival. He also said my mode of payment will be a US Certified Money Order or a certified cashier check as it pleases you,so pls let me know if this mode of payment is ok by you.And if YES pls provide me with the following information to get the payment to you.(1)Your full name as it will appear on the Money Order or cashier check as it pleases you,(2)your work or home address to ensure delivery in your hands through regular mails or a courier service,(3)your phone number on the package to keep contact close and avoid package missing in transit. Kindly get back to me as soon as possible with this requested address contact information so that we can proceed as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you soon .
N.B please kindly take off the room advert from the internet so i can be sure your renting the room to me cos am extremely interested in renting from you.
Best regards, (i omitted her name)

I am looking forward to hearing any comments from posters as to whether this is most likely a scam. I’m a bit disppointed if it is, as I was getting excited about having the room rented so quickly! Thank you, Victoria

  • 26. Victoria  |  February 8, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Hello again. If I WERE to send my address and name to a scammer, would they actually be able to steal my total identity with that limited (and frankly public) information?
If a cashier’s check was legitimate and this was a legitimate renter (see my earlier post with copy of the email) then the check, when it comes, would be for the correct amount and the renter would not ask for any money back – then I would KNOW it was legitmate, correct? Or am I still being naive? Thank you! Victoria

  • 27. Victoria  |  February 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

What is the best way to accept money for the rent/deposit from a potential renter? Cash only, in person? There are, of course, legitimate people who are traveling to new states/countries and need places to stay – I would not want to miss out on a legitimate renter.
Thanks for any advice/tips on renting out my room on Craigs list as I am new to this! Victoria

  • 28. berealct  |  February 9, 2008 at 3:35 pm

    Here’s what I would do.

-Forward her an application. I never take any money from anyone without an application.
-If she’s uncomfortable giving you personal info without knowing you are legitimate, then ask for a letter from her future employer in the US saying she has a job, with the contact info for the HR person in the US, a start date and salary.
-At the very minimum, before you give your personal info to her, google her name, google her employer, and find out if the group she is going to be working for has a local office.

    Good luck!

  • 29. charles  |  February 24, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I got 2 responses to my posting within hours and they are reproducced below. I asked for their particulars plus 3 letters of reference and didn’t hear back. Upon Googling their names and/or affiliations, thanks to helpful postings by others, I found out that the letters were identical in profile and language to others identified as scams. Renters beware!

I had our cabin listed for sale on Craigs List. This is an e-mail I got today from Mr. XXXXXXX in England.

    Hello,

Thanks for your mail, am okay with what i have read about this property and I will be buying it with my cash. am not taking any loan .i will be sending an attorney which I know he knows much and have good experience on estate management, he still advice that i should go ahead to purchase the property. Although he is presently out of the state but will be back soon. Well I will be visiting USA by march or April with my family and I need the property to be ready before then.

As regards the purchase agreement, I would want it as my review, I will eventually have it filled and signed on my arrival in your place or when my attorney arriver’s there as I am of the opinion that such documents are best filled and signed physically. We can start by our attorney going ahead with the process of purchasing the property while I send advance payment for you to understand that am serious and in order to keep the property too. I will like you to forward to me your name, address and phone # to receive advance payment of 1% to 5% of the total amount in order to keep the property till my attorney comes over to finish the agreement and what ever it take’s to buy the property. Once that is forwarded to me, I will instruct my USA financier to send the payment with a certified USA check,
Let me know if that sound’s okay with you.
Hope to see your respond soon.

I recently received a few emails from people who say they are interested in renting as well. The first was a female who gave lots of information about herself. What threw me off in the beginning was that she said a cheque will be issued in “excess” amount so that I can refund to her the remainder for her travelling expenses. I sent back an email asking her more questions and never heard from her again. The second was a man, George, who says he is on Sabatical leave. He also said that I will receive a large cheque and to send the remainder back to his travel manager. Why would his company send me a cheque for my apartment and not send the cheque for this flight to the travel manager? These people sound like total amateurs who do not even know how to scam. The funny thing is they all use the same sort of language and probably do not know what a dictionary is. Reading some of your emails, I know for sure that I was a target. My advice is that: no matter how good it sounds, and no matter how nice it would be to rent out a place quickly if it sounds fishy…it probably is. This site is great. Thanks everybody for taking the time to post. Here are some of the emails I’ve received.

If you can’t sort through that obvious BS, and were at all taken in, perhaps you should stick to your local newspaper.

I have some seaside property for you in Arizona.

thanks for getting back to me,how are you today?i will like to let you know am interested in renting the spot from you for 3-6 months depends on how long you will have the spot available.Below are just some few things you might want to know about me:
am stright, easy going and pretty laid back 28yrs old female….i do not smoke nor drink,am a christian but am not fanatical about my religion as i have always learnt to respect others religion/belief.Sometimes i love going to the beach at my leisure time to observe the wonders of nature,i work for an investment company here in west africa and coming to US cos the company i work for here is looking to open business correspondence in the US,this is my first visit to US and i do really hope to find a good place like yours to live in,if you can reseve the place for me i will surely appreciate that,i know there are several people interested in renting the place from you so am willing to make arrangement for some sort of deposit even with the first month rent so that will show commitment from my part,
And just for you to know that this trip will be sponsored by my employer and every expenses as regards the rent and utilities will be paid in full so you have nothing to worry about as to whether i will be able to pay rent or not,pls be aware that my trip to US is fast approaching and i will appreciate if you get back to me asap to know how we can work things out. Thanks
